Moya

You have to pass by a narrow road aligned with volcanic valleys if you want to take a shot at visiting the town of Moya . Like Firgas , it is also dainty and quaint. However, it has a very remarkable church built in the elegant style of Neo-Romanesque. It has been around for quite some time now, since the first half of the 20 th century. The town of Moya also prides itself for being the birthplace of the reputable Modernist Canary poet by the name of Tomás Morales.

The church we are referring to is situated on the outskirts of the ravine Barranco de Moya . This impressive parish church takes pride in its two towers, as well as notable and interesting sculpture pieces that can be found inside. One of them is the Virgen de la Candelaria. It was built way back in 15 th century and is basically made of cedar wood. In fact, the church in its entirety is solely dedicated to the Virgen de la Candelaria.
Moya
Just outside the church square you can find the house where the most popular poet of Gran Canaria was born and where he grew up. It is very fortunate indeed that this little piece of historical memoir left by Tomás Morales (1884-1921) has been well preserved and taken care of. In 1976, it was developed into a combined house and museum in tribute to the interesting and colorful life the poet lived and, of course, to his legacy of classic works. Another trivia we thought might interest you. Tomás Morales was actually a medical doctor by profession -- and he really practiced it. Visitors today can observe several of his things, most of which are still intact and in good condition. Some of those that draw the most attention include pictures, paintings, his Remington-typewriter and manuscripts, among other things. Oh, and since the house-con-museum also holds contemporary art exhibitions, you may also be interested in inquiring about that so you can attend the next one.

If you happen to have a sweet tooth and you constantly crave pastries and desserts to make your day, then you ve just found a haven in Moya ! Do you know why? That is because this little town is home to one of the most popular cakes in the whole of Gran Canaria , the bizcochas lustrados. Some people also call it the sugared sponge cake. Either way, we definitely recommend that you sample one of these before leaving. Or better yet, if you find that you fell in love with it on your first bite, why don t you buy a few more to take home with you?
