Triana

Very similar with the district of La Vegueta , the town of Triana is also known as one of the oldest districts in the city of Las Palmas . But apart from this interesting likeness which has managed to preserve many of the capital s priceless architectures and buildings, the town of Triana is also very famous for its modern and well-appointed major commercial centre.

The conversion of the main street of the district, the Calle Mayor , into a pedestrian area helped a lot in making the commercial centre flourish even more. At present, you can choose from a wide array of establishments there -- from old-fashioned shops which will seemingly take you back in time, to the modern department stores that now abound most urban cities in the world, even high-end boutiques if you have a lot of money to spare -- and anything in between!

If the districts of La Vegueta and Triana have an interesting similarity, they also have an intriguing difference. The neighborhood of the former is generally characterized by constricted roads aligned with older buildings, lending it an aura of medieval times -- that of the feudalistic period. On the other hand, the quarters of the latter can easily seen as having been influenced by the middle class. This is primarily because the many local, Andalusian, English, Maltese and Danish families who are involved in merchandising inhabited the town of Triana . It is also due to the settlement of many different families that Calle Mayor exemplifies many of the influences and styles found in the 18 th , 19 th and 20 th century. The street, by the way, goes down the whole district. Another thing we find interesting -- and we thought you should know -- is that even though Calle Mayor offers a number of modern residences, especially just at the entrance of the street, the whole Calle Mayor is still considered a national historical monument.

Triana
If you happen to wander in the south of the town, very near and almost opposite of the Mercado Publico , you might as well check out the Teatro Pérez Galdós . The theater was interestingly named after the well-renowned writer. And although you would likely find it modest and unassuming on the outside, because its exteriors have not been well-maintained, sad to say, the interiors would nevertheless appeal to you without a doubt. The inside of the Teatro Pérez Galdós is very elegant and speaks of sophistication and class. The auditorium is also very spacious, and can seat up to an approximate number of 1400 visitors. We think that once you ve seen it, you will not be surprised to find out that Teatro Pérez Galdós is in fact the best theater in the entire capital of Las Palmas . And to boot, it is also one of the most highly regarded in the whole of Canary Islands . Not far from there, just at the bend between Calle Cano and Calle Peregrina streets, you can find the Casa Museo de Pérez Galdós .

By now you must have visited quite a number of sites in Triana . But if you still have time to spare -- and we really hope you do -- why don t you try going to the places we will name in just a second. After all, you can never have too much valuable insight on a town you re visiting, can you?

Again in near proximity with the Casa Museo de Pérez Galdós, there is a pleasant small square you will find. It is called the Plazoleta de Cairasco . At the northern part of the square, your attention will likely be arrested by the sight of the art-nouveau styled Gabinete Literario . It was built in 1842 and was primarily intended to be a theatre. But it was transformed into a club in 1894. At present, the Gabinete Literario is home to a reputable literary society. It even has a restaurant and café featuring a well-appointed terrace.

Triana If you venture further in the district of Triana , you will discover that most of what the town values as the center of its cultural life can be found in the impressive building called the Centro de Iniciativas Culturales . The building is also commonly known as the Centre of Cultural Initiatives , or even CICCA. The Hotel Madrid is also a vivid picture of sophisticated culture and elegant history. The hotel is one of the oldest in the whole of Las Palmas . If you just want to lounge around, the Hotel Madrid is a very good place to go to. There you can have your meals and drinks right under the palm trees until very late in the evening -- and we re positive you will enjoy the experience whether you re alone or with company!

You do not have to go far from the aforementioned small square to come across the Alameda de Colón. At its northern end, you will see the Iglesia de San Francisco . It is not easy to miss it because it is really very near a bust of Columbus. The Iglesia de San Francisco was influenced by the style practiced during the colonial period. It features three central areas in the church, or what is more commonly termed as naves; the flooring of the whole building is done in white marble; the ceiling is in the fashion of the Mudéjar; and last but certainly not the list, you can also find a few art and historical statues done by Luján Pérez in the Iglesia de San Francisco. The church was destroyed when the Dutch pirates attacked in 1599. The Iglesia de San Francisco was reconstructed in the 17 th century. It went on to become a parochial church after the monks were compelled to leave (all of them went over the same fate all over Spain in 1821).
