La Vegueta |
 |
If you re inclined towards history, then the district of La Vegueta would definitely appeal to you. It has a number of interesting sites, most of which revolve around the rich history of the city.
We really encourage you to make Plaza Santa Ana your first stop. It is located only a few meters away from where the military encampment is. It might interest you to know that it is where the first settlement started. The entrance of the plaza is quite impressive, with bronze dog statues protecting the entryway. Actually, they (the dog statues, that is) represent what is generally known around town as the legendary dog. According to tradition, the dog has been appearing in the town s roofs for centuries, since 1506. The dog is also said to have been seen in several other historical buildings in La Vegueta . Fortunately, most of them are still intact.
After the Plaza Santa Ana , you may be prompted to check out other buildings of historical credits. One of them is the Palacio Regental. It is a building constructed mostly in the 17 th century, and now serves as the home of the president of Gran Canaria s High Court of Law. There is also the Casas Consistoriales , or the Offices of Island Government. It is a stately piece of architecture built in the 19 th century. The Palacio Episcopal , also known as the Bishop s Palace, is also worth your while. A disastrous fire occurred in 1599, and because of the tragedy, only an elaborate storey fa survived -- that, and the dignified Cathedral de Santa Ana .

You can take a stroll in the Calle del Doctor Chil . There you will come across the Church of the old Augustinian Convent . This is where you can find the High Court. Not far from there you will also encounter the Church of San Francisco de Borja , which is basically characterized by the Baroque period. The modest and unassuming Old Seminary is also in the Calle del Doctor Chil . But if you re looking for a museum, then head on to Museo Canario , or the Canary Island Museum, found around the block of the street Calle Doctor Verneau .
Not far from the Museo Canario is the Plaza del Espírito Santo . The Square of the Holy Spirit, as it is also known, is made up of a pleasant square complimented by a majestic fountain appropriately situated in the center. There are also quite a number of historical houses around the Plaza del Espírito Santo and, of course, you may also want to pay a visit to the Chapel of the Holy Spirit .
